5/10Critic Score

Neeraj Pandey's *Aiyaary* arrives as an ambitious espionage thriller that mistakes convoluted plotting for sophistication. The film's central premise—a decorated Army major uncovering institutional corruption—holds promise, but Pandey's execution crumbles under the weight of its own labyrinthine narrative. Sidharth Malhotra brings earnestness to the lead, though he's hamstrung by inconsistent character motivation, while Manoj Bajpayee delivers a more measured turn as the conflicted mentor figure. The real problem isn't the ensemble or even the technical filmmaking; it's that the story spirals into implausibility, asking audiences to accept too many convenient plot devices and character reversals without earning them dramatically. What should feel like a taut cat-and-mouse game instead feels like watching someone solve a puzzle they've rigged themselves.

The film's ₹34 crore domestic collection against its presumed budget tells you something the runtime already suggests: the audience wasn't invested. Where Pandey succeeded with *Special 26* through clarity and momentum, *Aiyaary* drowns in exposition and globe-trotting sequences that feel obligatory rather than organic. The London portions particularly suffer, becoming a series of disconnected set pieces rather than escalating tension. Cinematically, there's nothing here that advances the espionage genre—it borrows heavily from international thrillers without understanding what made those lean. The film wants to be a thinking

Storyline

So basically, this major in the Indian Army named Jai stumbles upon some seriously sketchy stuff while he's doing surveillance work. He overhears this retired general trying to bribe the Army Chief with millions of dollars, claiming it's for some fancy weapons deal, but it's actually a huge scam. When Jai realizes something fishy is going on, he decides to take matters into his own hands and goes off the grid with his girlfriend Sonia, who's a tech expert, and they steal classified information about a secret military unit called DSD.

Things get pretty intense from there because Jai's old mentor, Colonel Abhay Singh, gets caught in the middle trying to track him down. But here's the kicker—there's this sneaky brigadier who's actually working against them and feeding information to a corrupt retired general. The real villain turns out to be some powerful arms dealer named Mukesh Kapoor who's orchestrating the whole thing behind the scenes. Abhay barely escapes with his life when pursuers come after him, and everyone's scrambling to stay one step ahead.

The situation gets even messier when they decide to drag a journalist into it, giving her sensitive information that could expose everything the army's been hiding. Both Jai and Abhay end up in London trying to figure out their next move, with Jai staying undercover and connecting with Sonia. It becomes this wild cat-and-mouse game where nobody's quite sure who to trust, and the stakes keep getting higher as they dig deeper into the conspiracy.
