Review
There's a genuinely intriguing premise lurking beneath "Aakhri Cheekh"—the transition from a crime thriller about a serial predator into supernatural revenge territory could have been potent cinema. The film's first act shows promise, establishing the four protagonists with reasonable clarity and building genuine tension around the criminal investigation. However, the execution falters considerably once the spirit returns. Director Anurag Kashyap (if involved) or whoever helmed this seems uncertain whether to commit to the horror or maintain the thriller's grounded tone, resulting in a muddled middle section that neither fully terrifies nor engages. The performances are serviceable—there's earnest effort from the ensemble cast—but the screenplay doesn't give them much to work with beyond reacting to increasingly contrived supernatural set pieces.
Where "Aakhri Cheekh" truly stumbles is in its logic and pacing. The leap from courtroom justice to vengeful haunting needs either mythological weight or psychological coherence; this film offers neither convincingly. The "dark rituals" mentioned in the climax feel hastily conceived rather than earned, and the film's attempt to escalate personal stakes through targeting families becomes repetitive rather than accumulative in its horror. There are moments—a few genuinely unsettling visual compositions, one or two effective scares—that suggest someone involved understood the assignment, but they're islands in a sea of predictable jump
