5/10Critic Score

Ram Avtar's journey from barber to MLA should have been a compelling study in corruption and moral decay, but instead it plays out like a half-baked political sermon that mistakes sentimentality for substance. The premise has genuine potential—a man climbing the political ladder while his wife watches him transform into everything he once despised—yet the execution is maddeningly uneven. The director treats this material with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, spelling out every thematic point rather than trusting the audience to feel it. The performances are serviceable at best; there's no real spark between Ram Avtar and Sushma that would make her quiet heartbreak resonate, and the supporting cast feels like they're simply reading lines rather than inhabiting a world.

What grinds most is how the film squanders its own premise. The transformation sequence has moments of genuine electricity—watching our protagonist shed his humble barber's mantle for political power could be intoxicating cinema—but too often we cut away to heavy-handed montages and moralistic voice-overs that undermine any dramatic tension. Sushma's role as the moral compass could have been devastating, a quiet counterpoint to her husband's ascent, but she's relegated to reacting rather than driving narrative weight. The political commentary, which should cut deep, instead feels surface-level and preachy.

What works, marginally, is the film's core observation that ambition devours character—that's timeless

Storyline

Ram Avtar's living his quiet life as a humble barber in this sleepy village, raising his kids with his devoted second wife Sushma by his side. But here's where it gets wild—he's also the personal groomer for the big-shot Minister Digvijay Singh, which means he's got connections in places most village folks can't even dream of. When the minister needs a fresh candidate for the upcoming election, he doesn't hesitate to push Ram Avtar forward, and our barber hero actually takes the leap!

The transformation is absolutely electrifying—Ram Avtar wins big and catapults into the political stratosphere, becoming this powerful figure that everyone wants a piece of. But while he's climbing higher and higher, Sushma's watching it all unfold from the shadows, seeing how power's slowly changing the man she married. She's witnessing firsthand how success is reshaping him, and it's heartbreaking because she knows exactly what he's becoming.

It's a brilliant commentary on ambition and what we sacrifice to reach the top! Ram Avtar's journey from scissors and soap to silk suits and power is intoxicating to watch, but the real story sits in Sushma's quiet observation—she's the conscience of the film, the one who sees through all the glitter. This film nails that bittersweet reality that success often comes at the cost of losing yourself.
