Review
"Aabra Ka Daabra" attempts to weave a coming-of-age narrative with magical realism and thriller elements, but stumbles significantly in execution. The film's premise—a traumatized boy discovering solace and power through magic training—recalls stronger entries like "Harry Potter" or even Bollywood's own "Chandni Chowk to China," yet lacks the narrative cohesion and emotional depth those films achieved. The backstory involving Shanu's missing magician father and his redemption arc has genuine potential, but the screenplay dilutes this emotional core by rushing into contrived mystery elements. The principal's antagonistic subplot, meant to be the film's twist anchor, feels disconnected and poorly integrated, making the revelation feel more arbitrary than earned. Director's handling of tone is inconsistent—oscillating awkwardly between whimsical school sequences and dark thriller beats without establishing a compelling bridge between them.
Performatively, the film suffers from uneven casting and direction. Child actors often struggle with the material's tonal shifts, and without strong mentorship from the director, their scenes lack the naturalism required to ground the fantastical elements. The magical sequences themselves, which should be the film's visual calling card, appear underbaked—neither inventive enough to enchant nor technically polished enough to impress. The climactic confrontation between Shanu and the principal, positioned as the emotional and action crescendo,
Storyline
So basically, this kid named Shanu has a really rough childhood because his dad, who was this amazing magician, disappears during a dangerous stunt when Shanu's just a little guy. His mom and he struggle after that, and kids at school are pretty mean about it. But then Shanu catches a break—he wins a competition that lets him go to this super cool magic school called Aabra Ka Daabra. Once he gets there, he makes friends, learns all sorts of incredible magic tricks, and turns out to be naturally talented at it. Life seems to be looking up for him!
Things get weird when Shanu notices that the school's principal, this tough lady named Rang Birangi (everyone calls her RB), keeps sneaking into the forest at night for mysterious reasons. Shanu and his buddies decide to spy on her to figure out what's going on, and they discover something shocking that changes everything. It turns out the principal has been hiding a huge secret that directly connects to Shanu's tragic past, and she's been doing some pretty dark stuff to get what she wants.
What follows is this intense showdown between Shanu and the principal, with lots of magical fighting and high stakes involved. The whole thing gets pretty wild as Shanu realizes his journey at magic school is way more complicated than just learning cool tricks. There's a lot of action and drama as the story comes to a head, and you're left wondering what's going to happen next!
