83

Review

6.8/10Critic Score

Kabir Khan's "83" arrives as an ambitious patriotic sports drama that largely succeeds in capturing the euphoria of India's 1983 World Cup victory, even if the execution occasionally stumbles under the weight of its own sentimentality. Ranveer Singh delivers a committed performance as Kapil Dev, channeling both the captain's swagger and vulnerability with admirable nuance, while the supporting cast—particularly Tahir Raj Bhasin and Saqib Saleem—lends authenticity to their respective roles. The film's technical prowess is undeniable; the cricket sequences are meticulously choreographed and viscerally engaging, making even non-cricket enthusiasts invested in the match outcomes. However, the narrative structure becomes increasingly melodramatic in its second half, relying heavily on manufactured emotional beats—the injury subplot and family reunion montages feel more like Bollywood convention than organic storytelling. Where the film truly falters is in its characterization depth; most players remain caricatures rather than fully realized individuals, reducing what could have been a rich ensemble piece to a vehicle for Singh's star power.

The film's thematic ambition—exploring belief, resilience, and national pride—resonates genuinely, yet the execution often prioritizes spectacle over substance. Khan's direction competently orchestrates the cricket sequences but struggles with pacing during the interpersonal moments, allowing scenes to linger when they should snap forward. At

Storyline

So basically, back in 1983, the Indian cricket team gets invited to compete in the World Cup, and they head over to England with this bold captain named Kapil Dev who confidently tells everyone they're going to win it all, even though honestly their practice matches were pretty rough. The team gets divided into a group with some seriously tough competition—Australia, West Indies, and Zimbabwe—and nobody really expects much from them at this point.

Things start turning around when India pulls off this shocking upset victory against the West Indies, which was mind-blowing because they were supposed to crush India. The momentum keeps building as the team wins their next game against Zimbabwe too, with some brilliant individual performances from their players. But then reality hits hard when they face Australia and lose pretty badly, and things get even tougher when their key player gets a brutal injury during another match that literally leaves him needing stitches on his chin.

The team's confidence takes a real hit after this tough loss, and there's this moment where they're feeling pretty defeated—but then something small and touching happens that reminds them why they're fighting. They've got one more crucial match coming up against Zimbabwe, and if they lose that one, they're basically done for the tournament. Just when they need it most, some of the players' families show up to support them, which gives everyone a real boost.
