Rehana Sultan
Born: 19 November 1950
Rehana Sultan burst onto the Bollywood scene in 1970 with Dastak, a debut that didn't just turn heads—it earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress right out of the gate. After training at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, she brought a raw intensity to her roles that set her apart from her contemporaries. Her career spanned from the early '70s through the early '90s, during which she became known for taking on challenging, unconventional roles that weren't afraid to push boundaries. Her work in Dastak and subsequent films established her as an actress willing to explore complex characters and narratives. What made Rehana Sultan stand out was her fearless approach to cinema and her refusal to play it safe. She believed that sensuality and intimate scenes, when used authentically, could serve the story rather than just be eye candy—a philosophy she defended even as cinema evolved around her. Working with visionary director B. R. Ishara (who later became her spouse), she contributed to a wave of more progressive, realistic Indian cinema that questioned social norms. Though she stepped back from the industry after the early '90s, her influence on how Bollywood approached character-driven storytelling remains quietly significant, proving that sometimes the most impactful careers aren't always the longest ones.
Awards & Nominations
She won the National Film Award for her role in the film Dastak (1970). In the same year she also played the lead role in the film Chetna which was shot in 28 days along with the shooting of Dastak. That film was about the rehabilitation of prostitutes, and her role changed the portrayal of sex workers in Hindi cinema. Her avant-garde roles brought her success but limited her choices in future films. Some of her well known films include Haar Jeet (1972), Prem Parbat (1973) and the political satire Kissa Kursi Ka (1977). Vijay Anand's Hum Rahen Na Rahen (1984) in which she costarred with Shabana Azmi was her last Hindi film in a lead role. She has also appeared in a Punjabi movie Putt Jattan De (1981) with Shatrughan Sinha.
