Nadira Babbar
Born: 20 January 1948
Nadira Babbar is one of Hindi cinema and Indian theatre's most respected figures, with a career spanning over four decades. Born in Bombay in 1948, she's been a powerhouse both on stage and screen since the 1980s. Her theatre credentials are seriously impressive—she founded Ekjute in 1981, which became a landmark name in Hindi theatre and remains a significant cultural institution. Her work earned her the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2001, cementing her status as a theatre legend. While her theatre work is her main passion, she's also graced Hindi films with memorable performances, bringing that same depth and authenticity to the big screen. What makes Nadira special is her ability to completely inhabit whatever role she takes on, whether it's a pivotal character moment in a major film or groundbreaking theatre productions. She's had notable roles in acclaimed films like Bride and Prejudice and Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities, often playing complex maternal figures with nuance and gravitas. More recently, she appeared in Ghayal Once Again, proving she's still very much active and relevant. Beyond just acting, her work as a director and theatre innovator has shaped how Hindi theatre evolved over the decades. She's the kind of artist who commands respect the moment she appears on screen—the sort of performer who elevates every project she's part of. Married to fellow actor Raj Babbar, she's also a proud mother to actors Arya and Juhi Babbar, keeping the performing arts in the family.
