Nazir Kashmiri

Nazir Kashmiri was a character actor who became a true backbone of Hindi cinema, appearing in over 100 films across an incredible 67-year career stretching from 1941 to 2008. Starting out in Lahore productions, he made the big move to Bombay through Noor Jehan's production company, appearing in her films like Zeenat (1945) and Jugnu (1947). But it was really his long association with director B.R. Chopra that made him a fixture on screen—he showed up in most of Chopra's films from Ek Hi Raasta (1956) all the way to Kaala Patthar (1979). Beyond that, Kashmiri was equally comfortable working with legendary directors like Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, and I.S. Johar, proving his versatility and reliability as an actor. What made Nazir Kashmiri special was his ability to slip seamlessly into any role the script demanded—he wasn't the kind of actor who needed the hero's spotlight to deliver, which is exactly what Bollywood needed in its supporting cast. His contribution to Hindi cinema was quiet but steady, showing up in classics like Dharmputra (1961), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), and Kabhi Kabhi (1976), where he added depth to scenes without stealing focus. Even in the 1970s and early 1980s, films like Zameer (1975), Dastaan (1972), and Vakil Babu (1982) showcased his enduring presence, making him one of the most dependable character actors of his generation.
