B. Saroja Devi
Born: 7 January 1938
B. Saroja Devi was genuinely one of Indian cinema's most formidable talents, gracing over 200 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema during an extraordinary seven-decade career. Breaking through at just 17 with the Kannada film *Mahakavi Kalidasa*, she quickly became the first lady superstar of Kannada cinema and earned the affectionate nicknames "Kannadathu Painkili" in Tamil and "Abhinaya Saraswathi" (Goddess of Acting) in Kannada circles. Her filmography reads like a who's who of South Indian cinema classics—from *Nadodi Mannan* that cemented her Tamil superstardom to standout work in Telugu and Hindi productions. The government recognized her immense contributions with the Padma Shri in 1969 and the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 1992, cementing her legacy as not just an actress but a cultural institution. What made Saroja Devi truly special was her ability to command the screen with grace and depth across multiple industries and languages—a rare feat that speaks to her range as a performer. Even after marriage in 1967, she continued delivering compelling performances well into the 1980s, refusing to fade into the background like many of her contemporaries. Her influence on Kannada and Tamil cinema in particular remains unmatched, and she received numerous lifetime achievement awards including the Dr. Rajkumar Award and the NTR National Award. Fittingly, in 2025, the Government of Karnataka posthumously honored her with the Karnataka Ratna, making her the first woman to receive the state's highest civilian award—a perfect tribute to a legend who shaped Indian cinema for generations.
