Review
Rajshree Thakur's *Socha Na Tha* arrives as a surprisingly earnest romantic drama that attempts to wrestle with the messy contradictions between modern love and family obligation—a theme that feels genuinely urgent in the Indian context. The film's central premise, wherein two people discover authentic connection while already pledged to others, could have descended into melodrama, but instead it maintains a thoughtful restraint that recalls the quieter moments of Imtiaz Ali's work. Rishi Kapoor and Deepika Padukone carry the film with palpable chemistry; Kapoor brings a conflicted tenderness to Viren's moral crisis, while Padukone conveys Aditi's intelligence and vulnerability without resorting to simpering. The Goa sequences, in particular, breathe with a naturalism that elevates them beyond typical romantic montage territory—these feel like genuine moments of two people recognizing themselves in each other.
Where *Socha Na Tha* stumbles is in its third act navigation of consequences. The film builds considerable emotional investment in Viren and Aditi's dilemma, yet the resolution feels hurried and somewhat evasive, as though Thakur lost nerve in committing fully to the moral complexity she'd established. Storyline
So basically, there's this guy Viren whose family tries to set him up with a girl named Aditi, but he's totally resistant because he's already committed to his girlfriend Karen. The whole thing creates this awkward situation where Aditi's family feels rejected and hurt. But then fate brings Viren and Aditi together randomly, and they actually click really well as friends pretty quickly.
Things escalate when Viren asks Aditi to go to Goa with him to help figure out if Karen actually loves him. While they're there, the two of them start developing real feelings for each other, and Viren realizes he's actually fallen for Aditi instead. The problem is that he's already in the process of getting married to Karen – and it was a whole thing because they're from different religions and his family fought hard to accept that relationship.
Meanwhile, Aditi's got her own family drama because her aunt and uncle have arranged her engagement to her on-and-off boyfriend Mahesh. So even though both Viren and Aditi are clearly into each other, they're stuck in these complicated situations with other people and can't just be together without causing chaos. You'll have to watch to see how they actually deal with all this mess!
