Karan Malhotra's "Shamshera" arrives with ambitious intentions—a period actioner rooted in caste oppression and tribal resistance—but stumbles significantly in execution. The film's central premise, spanning two timelines, possesses genuine dramatic weight: a father's legendary defiance against systemic cruelty and his son's path to honoring that legacy. Ranbir Kapoor delivers a physically committed performance, particularly in the flashback sequences where Shamshera's raw anger and strategic cunning shine through. However, the screenplay dilutes these compelling threads with bloated runtime and uneven pacing. The first half drowns in exposition, and by the time the narrative shifts to present-day Balli, the emotional investment has frayed. Sanjay Dutt brings menace to Shudh Singh, though the character remains frustratingly one-dimensional—a corrupt cop without the psychological complexity that would elevate him beyond stock villainy.

What works intermittently are the action sequences and the film's earnest attempt to examine feudal exploitation and police brutality. The cinematography captures the period aesthetic competently, and there are moments—particularly in the climactic portions—where Malhotra's directorial vision crystallizes into something potent. What doesn't work is the overwrought emotional manipulation, the clumsy integration of romance, and dialogue that often feels stilted rather than organic. The film tries to be an epic but spreads itself too thin narrativ

Storyline

So basically, there's this guy Balli who wants to be a police officer, right? But when he shows up for his test, this corrupt cop named Shudh Singh is running things and asks him to do something absolutely horrible—beat up a kid—just to "prove himself." Balli's like, no way, and instead takes the punishment meant for the child. That night, his whole world shifts when he finds out about his father Shamshera's legendary past.

Fast forward to decades earlier, and you meet Shamshera himself. His entire tribe, the Khamerans, are being crushed under the thumb of the powerful people in this kingdom called Kaza. They're treated like dirt because of caste stuff, so Shamshera decides he's had enough and starts fighting back, raiding the kingdom to protect his people. But this just scares everyone in power, so they literally call in the British army to wipe out the tribe and take their forest.

Here's where it gets intense—Shamshera and his warriors actually fight off the British! But then they get a message promising peace and respect if they just stop the raids and move to some fortress. Sounds good, right? Nope, it's a total setup. Shudh Singh orchestrates this whole trap, captures them all, and tortures them brutally. Then the British demand an impossible ransom of ten thousand gold coins or the entire tribe suffers. Shamshera has to come up with something clever to save his people from this nightmare.
