Review
Aditya Datt's *Ram Setu* attempts to straddle a precarious line between archaeological thriller and nationalist vindication, but stumbles in its execution of both. The film's central premise—a rationalist archaeologist forced to reckon with evidence that validates rather than debunks mythology—could have been intellectually robust, akin to the layered complexities of films like *Hey Ram* or even the measured skepticism of *Khuda Haafiz*. Instead, Datt opts for a more conventional adventure-mystery formula, where Akshay Kumar's Aryan transforms from principled academic to action-hero-cum-believer with little narrative friction. The supporting cast feels largely extraneous, their character arcs underdeveloped, and the international expedition sequences lean toward Hollywood pastiche rather than grounded Indian cinema. Kumar delivers a serviceable performance, though his screen presence alone cannot compensate for a script that prioritizes spectacle over substantive engagement with its own central conflict.
What ultimately derails the film is its unwillingness to genuinely interrogate the ideological terrain it enters. Rather than examining the intersection of faith, science, and nationalism with the nuance the subject demands, *Ram Setu* settles for a plot that resolves its tensions through convenient revelations and CGI-heavy set pieces. The climactic sequences feel unearned, the villain's motivations murky, and the supposed archaeological discoveries—the film's raison d'être
Storyline
Dr. Aryan Kulshreshtha, a rationalist archaeologist with the Indian Survey, finds himself at the center of a controversy when he submits a report to India's top court dismissing the Ram Setu as mythological fiction rather than a historical structure. The submission sparks nationwide outrage and leads to his professional suspension, leaving him professionally isolated and publicly vilified for questioning the historical basis of the revered bridge.
A wealthy businessman named Indrakant approaches Aryan with a proposition: join a research expedition to study the Ram Setu's origins in exchange for financial support and rehabilitation. What appears to be a genuine archaeological opportunity sets Aryan on a journey alongside international colleagues to uncover the truth about the bridge's age and construction.
As the team conducts extensive research, they unearth surprising discoveries about the Ram Setu's timeline and structure, revealing layers of geological and archaeological evidence that challenge both the mythological narrative and Aryan's initial dismissals. However, their findings attract dangerous attention as hidden agendas emerge around the monument, forcing Aryan to navigate conflicting interests and moral dilemmas.
