7/10Critic Score

There's something genuinely moving about a film that understands the quiet devastation of unfulfilled dreams, and "Mr. & Mrs. Mahi" reaches for that tender space with earnest conviction. Rajkumar Hirani crafts a story that feels almost autobiographical in its examination of ego masquerading as ambition—watching Mahendra grapple with his own failure while trying to mold his wife's success is uncomfortable in the best way. Rajummar and Janhvi Kapoor share a palpable chemistry that sells both the romance and the conflict; their banter carries weight because we sense genuine affection beneath the friction. The film doesn't shy away from the messiness of partnership—this isn't a simple love story where sacrifice equals nobility. Instead, it interrogates what it truly means to support someone when your own wounds are still bleeding.

Yet the execution sometimes falters where the heart doesn't. The turning point arrives too neatly, courtesy of a mother's wisdom that, while touching, feels somewhat prescribed rather than earned through real character transformation. There's a stretch in the second half where the cricket sequences become repetitive, and the film loses the intimate domesticity that made the early sections sing. Hirani's direction is earnest but occasionally heavy-handed, spelling out emotional beats when subtlety would have landed harder. The film works because its core insight—that love means stepping aside from your own spotlight—is universal and true, but it doesn't

Storyline

An arranged marriage unites Mahendra, a washed-up cricketer, with Mahima, a successful physician in Jaipur. Both sharing the nickname "Mahi," they embody the couple's moniker Mr. and Mrs. Mahi. The pair soon realizes they share an unbridled passion for cricket, setting the stage for an unexpected partnership.

When Mahendra notices his wife effortlessly hitting tennis balls for sixes, he recognizes raw talent and urges her to pursue professional cricket. However, his desire to establish himself as a coach rather than support her ambitions creates friction between them. Ego and unfulfilled dreams threaten to derail their relationship as Mahendra struggles with his role.

A turning point arrives when Mahendra's mother imparts wisdom from her own life, reminding him that true success lies in personal fulfillment and lifting others up. This revelation prompts Mahendra to reassess his priorities and champion his wife's cricketing dreams. Mahima subsequently abandons her medical practice to fully commit to her sporting aspirations, cementing their journey as an imperfectly perfect union.
