Review
There's something bittersweet about watching *Mission Majnu*—a film that reaches for the intensity of a true espionage thriller but settles somewhere in the middle ground, never quite gripping you the way it desperately wants to. Sidharth Malhotra carries the weight of the narrative with genuine conviction, particularly in moments where his character wrestles with personal demons alongside patriotic duty, and there's an earnestness to his performance that deserves recognition. The film also deserves credit for avoiding the jingoistic excess that plagues so many Indo-Pak narratives, instead offering a nuanced look at how leadership shaped a complex relationship in the 1970s. Yet for all these strengths, the screenplay stumbles—stretching its action sequences beyond necessity, relying on convenient plot devices that undermine tension, and wrapping everything in a formula that feels too familiar. Rashmika Mandanna, meanwhile, is underutilized, left to generate chemistry rather than drive her own arc.
What *Mission Majnu* needed was the tautness its premise promises. There are genuinely interesting ideas at play—the subtle ways information is extracted, the sensory intelligence that defies logic—but the execution turns what could've been thrilling into something that meanders. The second hour shows glimpses of the film it might have been, but by then, the spy thriller's greatest enemy isn't the enemy nation; it's the pacing that drains your investment. It's a film worth watching
Storyline
A shadow falls across the subcontinent in the early seventies when a man named Aman Singh disappears into the underworld of Pakistan, shedding his identity like a snake sheds skin. He becomes Tariq Hussain—a ghost among the living—and in the darkness of his double life, something unexpected blooms: love. He finds himself bound to Nasreen, a woman who cannot see the world around her, yet somehow sees him more clearly than anyone ever could. But love is a luxury a spy cannot afford, and when India's nuclear ambitions explode onto the world stage, Aman's carefully constructed life begins to crack.
The machinery of espionage shifts into motion when Delhi's power brokers realize that Pakistan is racing toward the bomb, accelerated by a brilliant nuclear engineer determined to reshape the balance of power. A dangerous mission materializes from the shadows—one that will test every ounce of Aman's cunning and courage. He is no longer just a man living a lie; he becomes the nation's last hope, a operative threading through an impossible web of secrets, armed only with his wits and his connections to fellow agents scattered across enemy territory.
Yet as Aman draws closer to the heart of Pakistan's nuclear ambitions, the political ground beneath India's feet shifts dangerously. A new government emerges with different ideals, one that turns away from the shadowy business of espionage and intelligence operations. Those who once directed Aman from Delhi must choose between following orders from above or keeping a covert operation alive in the darkness—and the cost of that choice threatens to unravel everything Aman has sacrificed to build.
