5/10Critic Score

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Jimmy" attempts a convoluted murder-mystery-thriller with a premise that had potential—a man confessing to a crime he may not have committed, trapped in a web of conspiracy. But potential and execution are two different beasts, and this film stumbles badly on both counts. The narrative is overstuffed and meandering, jumping between the mechanic-turned-DJ's double life, courtroom theatrics, and prison revelations without ever building genuine momentum or tension. Director Bhansali seems more interested in style than substance, drowning scenes in melodrama when the story desperately needs clarity and propulsive storytelling. The performances are serviceable at best—the lead actor carries the film competently but lacks the intensity required to make us believe his character's inexplicable confession, and the supporting cast feels wasted in poorly developed roles that exist merely to push the plot forward.

What truly derails "Jimmy" is its inability to sustain the central mystery that should anchor the entire experience. Revelations arrive with all the impact of a wet slap, twists feel contrived rather than earned, and by the midpoint, you stop caring whether the protagonist is guilty or innocent. The film's 79% ROI collapse isn't surprising—audiences can smell hollow filmmaking from a mile away. There's a competent thriller trapped somewhere in this mess, but it's buried under heavy-handed direction, bloated runtime, and a screenplay that mistakes compl

Storyline

So there's this guy named Jimmy who's living this wild double life—by day he's fixing cars at a mechanic shop, but at night he's this super popular DJ at the local dance club. Thing is, he's drowning in his late father's debts and trying to keep his head above water. Then one day, a young woman's body is discovered, and all the evidence points straight to him—her purse is even found near the body. When the police bring him in for questioning, Jimmy shocks everyone by actually confessing to the murder. His girlfriend and mother can't believe it, but he admits to killing a girl named Rithu Bhatnagar.

Jimmy gets convicted and sentenced to death, but here's where things get really twisted. The whole situation just doesn't add up—why would a guy with everything to live for suddenly commit such a brutal crime? There's clearly something deeper going on, some hidden reason behind his confession. Either he's the real killer and has some crazy motive nobody understands, or he knows way more about who actually did it than he's letting on.

Once Jimmy lands in prison, he has this major realization that he's been caught up in some kind of dark conspiracy. By then it feels like it's too late for him, but then things start taking unexpected turns. What unfolds from there is this intense, edge-of-your-seat thriller packed with lies, murder, and shocking revelations that'll keep you guessing the whole time.
