Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story stumbles right out of the gate with a premise that feels cobbled together from rejected Netflix pitches. The bones are there—a fish-out-of-water story about ambition meeting street life in Mumbai has potential—but the execution is painfully half-baked. Director Jai Basantu seems more interested in checking boxes than building genuine tension or chemistry. The romance between Simran and Jayanta arrives not through earned moments but through contrived melodrama (an overdose on supplements? Really?), and what should have been a complex exploration of class and morality devolves into standard Bollywood sentimentality. The film wants us to believe a gangster with a five-year prison stretch and a corporate burnout can fall in love over hospital visits and bar dreams, but the screenplay gives us no reason to invest in their journey beyond surface-level charm.

The performances don't help matters. While both leads try their best, there's a fundamental mismatch between the gritty premise and the saccharine execution—they're playing a crime drama in what feels like a rom-com written by someone who's never actually met a gangster or an engineer. The supporting cast fades into the background, and the crime boss antagonist is so undercooked he might as well not exist. Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story had a chance to say something real about survival, redemption, and unconventional love in India's cities. Instead, it settles for being a forgettable, thinly plotted romance

Storyline

So this movie is basically about how Mumbai can completely flip your life upside down, you know? We follow Simran, this ambitious engineering grad who moves to the city with big dreams of making it in IT. She lands a decent job and thinks she's got it all figured out, but then—boom—her company tanks after just a few months. Suddenly she's broke, struggling to find work, and ends up living in this sketchy, cheap housing colony just trying to survive.

That's where she meets her neighbor Jayanta Bhai, who's basically a gangster working under this big crime boss. The guy just got out of prison after doing five years for a crime he didn't even commit, and he's still chasing this dream of opening his own bar someday. At first, Simran thinks he's total bad news and keeps her distance, but then he does something genuinely sweet that changes her whole perspective. He carries her on his back to the hospital when she accidentally overdoses on supplements and collapses in her room, which is honestly kind of endearing.

Once she sees past the tough-guy gangster exterior, Simran realizes Jayanta's actually pretty funny, caring, and genuinely decent underneath it all. She starts catching feelings for him, and things between them get pretty serious—like, they actually become intimate one night. But life gets complicated when her dad starts pressuring her about her career and when she should get married, so things get interesting from there!
