Chandoo Mondeti's *Jalebi* has the bones of a genuinely affecting drama about loss, betrayal, and the ghosts we carry—but it fumbles the execution so badly that what should've been cathartic becomes merely maudlin. The premise is solid: a woman confronts her past love on a train journey years after a miscarriage tore them apart. Varun Mitra and Rhea Chakraborty have moments of real chemistry and vulnerability, particularly in scenes where unspoken anguish hangs between them. But the screenplay treats emotional complexity like a shopping checklist—ticking off plot points without earning them. The coincidence of the daughter's name, the timing of the chance encounter, the mother-in-law's cartoonish cruelty: all of it feels engineered rather than lived.
Mondeti's direction lacks the nuance this material demands. Heavy-handed background score swells every time we're supposed to feel something, as if the audience can't be trusted to arrive there independently. Chakraborty's performance oscillates between genuine introspection and overwrought melodrama, often within the same scene. The film wants to explore how tragedy reshapes us, but instead it settles for wallowing in it. There's a difference between poignancy and self-pity, and *Jalebi* doesn't know which side of that line it's on. By the climax, what began as promising emotional territory has devolved into soap opera territory, complete with convenient revelations that solve nothing and answer less.

Storyline
So this girl Aisha moves to Delhi from Mumbai to gather inspiration for her writing, and she ends up meeting this charming local guy named Dev. They totally hit it off, fall head over heels, and before you know it, they're getting married! Things seem perfect when she finds out she's expecting, but Aisha gets cold feet about becoming a mom. Dev's really excited though, and they even start imagining their future daughter together. But then tragedy strikes—Aisha has a miscarriage, and instead of supporting her through it, Dev's mom actually blames her for what happened. It's heartbreaking, and Aisha feels so betrayed that she decides to leave him.
Years pass, and Aisha tries to move on with her life. She even gets close to marrying someone else, but she realizes she can never truly let go of Dev. So she gathers up her courage and heads back to Delhi to finally deal with all the unresolved feelings between them. On her train ride there, fate plays its hand and she encounters Dev again, along with a woman named Anu and her young daughter. And here's where things get complicated—it turns out Anu is actually Dev's new wife, which hits Aisha like a ton of bricks.
During the train journey, all these memories come flooding back for Aisha as she's forced to confront her past with Dev. But then she discovers something shocking about the little girl—her name is Disha, the same name they had picked out for their own child years ago. This discovery really upsets Aisha, and she questions why Dev would use that name again. However, Anu then reveals a huge twist that changes everything Aisha thought she knew about Dev's new family situation.
