5/10Critic Score

Ishaqzaade is a film that mistakes melodrama for passion and confuses betrayal with complexity. Madhur Bhandarkar's direction here feels scattered—he builds genuine tension in the first act with the communal politics and the chemistry between Parineeti Chopra and Arjun Kapoor, but then the narrative spirals into absurdity. A man converting religions as a *revenge plot*? It's not bold; it's lazy storytelling that treats serious themes like conversion and faith as plot mechanics. Chopra, however, anchors the film with remarkable conviction. Her Zoya isn't just a victim—she's intelligent, furious, and believable. Arjun Kapoor struggles more with the character's tonal shifts; he's charming when the film wants him charming, conflicted when convenient, but rarely lands the nuance needed for a protagonist who's both villain and hero.

The second half collapses under the weight of its own contradictions. Once the "revenge twist" is revealed, the film tries to rehabilitate Parma through apologies and supposed character growth, but there's no real reckoning—just convenient plotting that asks us to forgive betrayal because love. The family drama and the final chase feel like filler, stretching a two-hour concept into a bloated romantic thriller. What *does* work is the film's willingness to embed political unrest and communal tension into a love story; that's genuinely interesting. But Bhandarkar needed the discipline to commit to either the political drama or the romance, not this half

Storyline

So basically, there's this town where two families—the Chauhans and Qureshis—absolutely hate each other's guts because of politics. You've got Parma, this rebellious guy from the Chauhan side who's always getting into trouble and disappointing his family, and then there's Zoya from the Qureshi family who's bold and wants to get into politics herself, but her conservative family keeps shutting her down. When the election season heats up, these two keep bumping heads but weirdly, they can't stop thinking about each other.

The tension between them turns into full-blown romance, and they end up running away together. Parma even converts to Islam and changes his name to Parvez, and they get married. But then—and this is where things get super messy—Parma admits that the whole thing was actually just a plan to humiliate Zoya and get revenge on her family. Zoya's completely devastated and wants to get back at him, but then some serious family drama goes down that makes Parma realize he's been a total jerk and he switches sides to protect Zoya instead.

After all this chaos, the two of them have to hide out and basically go into hiding. Zoya slowly starts to trust him again as he genuinely apologizes, and they actually get properly married this time. They try to make peace and bring their families together, but things don't go smoothly and they have to run away again. Both families are now on their trail, and it becomes this whole intense chase situation.
