5.5/10Critic Score

Vidyut Jammwal's IB71 arrives as a well-intentioned period thriller that finds itself caught between ambition and execution. The film draws from a genuinely compelling chapter of India's intelligence history, and there's clear merit in its attempt to chronicle an overlooked espionage operation from the 1971 Indo-Pak War. Jammwal, stepping away from his action-hero comfort zone, demonstrates restraint in his performance, allowing the narrative to take center stage. The runtime maintains a brisk pace for much of its length, and when the film hits its stride—particularly in the second half—it manages to deliver moments that grip the viewer with genuine tension.

However, the screenplay emerges as the film's critical Achilles heel. With six credited writers, the narrative feels fragmented and disjointed, as though multiple visions were stitched together without proper cohesion. The first half particularly struggles to establish momentum, and even as the story accelerates, audiences find themselves at arm's length, unable to fully invest in the unfolding drama. The writing opts for a conventional spy-thriller formula rather than finding its own distinctive voice, leaving the genuine historical material feeling somewhat pedestrian. What could have been a taut, compelling account becomes a middling affair that never quite justifies its own existence.

IB71 is serviceable weekend fare for those seeking an undemanding spy drama, and its patriotic undertones will resonate with certain

Storyline

During the tumultuous year of 1971, India's intelligence apparatus intercepts alarming intelligence suggesting that Pakistan and China are preparing coordinated military strikes from East Pakistani bases, threatening to sever the northeastern region from the rest of the nation. With mere days before the anticipated assault, an IB operative proposes a daring countermeasure: closing Indian airspace to Pakistani aircraft movements between their eastern and western territories. Faced with diplomatic constraints, his superiors initially balk at the controversial strategy.

To circumvent international treaties, the operative devises an audacious workaround—orchestrating the hijacking of a civilian Indian aircraft by Kashmiri militants and forcing it to land in Pakistani territory would furnish the government with legal justification to implement the airspace restrictions. Though initially regarded as an impractical fantasy, the intelligence establishment ultimately embraces the operation and authorizes its implementation, assembling a covert team to execute the dangerous mission.

The operation spirals into chaos when the team—composed entirely of undercover intelligence personnel posing as passengers—finds itself stranded in a Lahore hotel, where circumstances veer sharply off course. What unfolds becomes a far more complex and perilous situation than the strategists had anticipated, forcing the operatives to navigate unforeseen obstacles in enemy territory.
