Review
Vikram Bose's review of *Humko Deewana Kar Gaye*:
Chandrakant Khurana's film arrives as a well-intentioned romantic drama that attempts to explore the collision between tradition and modernity through a cross-continental love story. The premise—two engaged individuals finding themselves in each other while separated from their partners—carries genuine dramatic potential, and the Canadian setting provides a refreshing backdrop for what might otherwise be a formulaic Bollywood romance. What works here is the film's refusal to paint either protagonist as inherently villainous; there's a maturity in acknowledging that Aditya and Sonia, like Jia and her fiancé, are simply mismatched rather than malicious. The performances, particularly in the quieter moments, reflect this nuance—there's a weariness to these characters that speaks to real incompatibility rather than manufactured conflict.
However, the execution falters where the ambition should flourish. The film takes considerable time establishing the emotional disconnect between our leads and their respective partners, yet squanders much of that groundwork once the romance ignites. The car rally sequence feels obligatory rather than organic, serving plot mechanics when the story might have benefited from deeper exploration of guilt, conflict, and consequence. Storyline
So there's this guy Aditya who's totally into cars and works as a test driver, but he's already engaged to this woman named Sonia who's a fashion designer. The thing is, they're just completely different people—he's all about tradition while she couldn't care less about it. Their families are already planning the wedding, but you can tell something's off between them. Then his company sends him to Canada to check out some new car technology, and wouldn't you know it, Sonia takes off to Paris for her fashion work at the exact same time.
When Aditya gets to Canada, his sister and her family are there to welcome him, and that's when he keeps running into this girl named Jia. She's the daughter of some super wealthy businessman and she's engaged to another rich guy, but she came to Canada solo to do wedding shopping. Here's the thing though—despite having everything money can buy, Jia's actually a really down-to-earth person who just wants genuine love. Her dad's always been too busy for her, and now her fiancé is the same way, so she and Aditya start hanging out and really click as friends.
Aditya convinces Jia to team up with him for this car rally competition, and they end up winning the whole thing together. On their way back from celebrating, their car ends up stranded in the snow and they have to spend the night together in the middle of nowhere. That's when things between them start to shift from just friendship into something way more complicated.
