5/10Critic Score

This film is a masterclass in wasting a genuinely compelling premise. The central concept—a transactional marriage that blooms into something real, only to crumble when contractual obligations expire—has genuine emotional teeth. But Vikram Bhatt's direction is so heavy-handed and melodramatic that what could've been a nuanced exploration of love, compromise, and human connection devolves into saccharine nonsense. Ajay Devgn sleepwalks through the role of Vijay with all the conviction of a man fulfilling a contractual obligation himself, while Madhuri Dixit, despite her formidable screen presence, can't salvage a character written with all the depth of a greeting card. The "one-year trial marriage" concept gets buried under endless close-ups, sentimental music, and scenes designed purely to manipulate tears rather than earn them.

What's infuriating is that there are moments—rare, fleeting moments—where the film almost gets it right. The early chemistry between the leads suggests chemistry that could've grounded this story, and there are individual scenes of genuine warmth. But then the film pivots into overwrought territory, particularly in the final act, where every emotion feels amplified to ridiculous proportions. The supporting cast exists merely as props, and the resolution feels dishonest to the setup, choosing convenient sentimentality over actual character work. Bhatt's filmography already suggests a director more interested in emotional manipulation than storytelling

Storyline

So basically, there's this super wealthy guy named Vishwanath who's got a son called Vijay, and he's desperately trying to get Vijay married because Vijay keeps saying he wants to stay single. Vishwanath actually bribes him with sweets to get him to agree to matrimony—which is kind of hilarious when you think about it. Meanwhile, there's this hardworking woman named Megha who works as Vishwanath's assistant and is basically struggling to keep her family afloat.

Here's where things get interesting: Vishwanath offers Megha a proposition to marry Vijay, but there's a catch—it's basically a one-year trial marriage with an exit clause. If Vijay doesn't fall in love with her by the end of the year, they can just split up and she gets paid. Megha's pretty hesitant about the whole thing because, well, it's a weird arrangement, but her family's financial situation is so bad that she can't really turn down the money.

Once they get married, something unexpected happens—Vijay and Megha actually start getting along really well. She's super caring, especially when he gets into a car accident and she takes great care of him. But when that one-year mark comes around, things take a turn, and Vijay decides to go through with the annulment like they originally agreed, treating their relationship as just a friendship that's ending. Megha has to leave and go back to her own life, and that's when the real emotional stuff kicks in for everyone involved.
