Review
Guns of Banaras stumbles in its attempt to craft a gritty crime thriller set against the backdrop of the holy city. The film's central narrative weakness lies in an underdeveloped protagonist whose motivations feel murky and unconvincing—a fatal flaw in a genre that demands clarity of purpose and emotional investment. Where films like Gangs of Wasseypur managed to build compelling antiheroes through meticulous character work, this venture fails to establish why we should care about its central character's journey, leaving viewers adrift in what amounts to an unpleasant and unmotivated ride through predictable crime cinema.
The film's execution across direction, storytelling, and performances fails to compensate for these fundamental narrative shortcomings. Without a strong emotional anchor or thematic clarity, even technically proficient filmmaking cannot salvage a film that asks audiences to invest two hours in a character and his circumstances that feel hollow and poorly justified. It's a cautionary reminder that in crime dramas, the why matters as much as the what—and this film forgets to answer the former with any conviction.
