Review
Genius attempts to straddle two distinct narratives—a spy thriller and a college romance—but struggles to give either the depth they deserve. The film opens with Vasudev at his lowest point, broken and disillusioned, which should carry emotional weight, but the flashback structure undermines any urgency we might feel about his present crisis. The IIT Roorkee sequences, meant to be the emotional anchor, feel remarkably superficial; the enemies-to-lovers arc between Vasudev and Nandini is executed with all the sophistication of a typical college romance, complete with predictable banter and convenient plot turns. Director's previous work has hovered around competence without distinction, and this film follows that pattern—competently shot, adequately performed, but lacking the narrative coherence or emotional intelligence to elevate either the romantic or espionage elements. The twist involving Nandini's sabotage attempt and Vasudev's self-sacrificial response tries for poignancy but arrives too late and feels unearned given the shallow character development preceding it.
What's most frustrating is how the film wastes its premise. A story about a brilliant intelligence operative grappling with failure and redemption could resonate deeply, much like how *Raees* or *Baby* managed to blend personal turmoil with professional stakes. Instead, we get a forgettable romance padded with a spy backdrop that never meaningfully intersects with the emotional core. The performances are serv
Storyline
So there's this brilliant guy named Vasudev who works as a spy for India's intelligence agency, but he's hit rock bottom after messing up a mission and getting seriously hurt. He's sitting alone in a park feeling completely lost when his ex shows up to comfort him. That's when the movie flashes back to show us how these two crazy kids actually met and fell in love.
Back in college at IIT Roorkee, Vasudev was basically the smartest guy around—charming, witty, and secretly doing hacking work for the spy agency on the side. There's this girl named Nandini who came in second in their class, and honestly, she was so jealous of him that she made it her mission to make his life miserable. They kept going back and forth, with her trying to one-up him and him always managing to stay ahead of the game, but there was definitely some chemistry brewing between all that bickering.
Things get intense the night before their final exams when Nandini shows up at Vasudev's place asking for help with some tough math problem. He finally tells her he's been crazy about her this whole time, which catches her completely off guard. The next day at the exam, she tries a pretty messed up move to keep him from showing up, but he surprises her by arriving anyway—and then he does something totally unexpected that shows just how deep his feelings really are.
