Rishab Seth's "Farrey" attempts to explore the morally grey space between desperation and ambition, a thematic territory that Bollywood has mined before with considerably more finesse. The film's central premise—underprivileged students monetizing academic expertise by enabling wealthy peers to cheat—carries genuine potential, and Ishita Chauhan brings an earnest quality to Niyati that occasionally grounds the narrative's ethical quandaries. However, the execution falters significantly. The direction lacks the sharp social commentary that elevated films like "Cheat India" or even the darker cynicism of "3 Idiots," instead oscillating between melodrama and crime-thriller conventions without committing fully to either. The supporting cast feels underutilized, and Chhavi's character never transcends the one-dimensional "rich girl" archetype, reducing what could have been a compelling class-divide dynamic into surface-level conflict.

What truly hampers "Farrey" is its inability to sustain dramatic tension across its runtime. The cheating scheme, which should be the narrative engine, unfolds predictably with few genuine surprises, and the film's attempts at moralizing—Niyati sending money back to the orphanage—come across as convenient character whitewashing rather than authentic moral complexity. For a film built entirely on deception and its consequences, there's a surprising lack of real stakes or consequences that resonate emotionally. The climax fails to deliver the reckonin

Storyline

So okay, there's this girl Niyati who grew up in an orphanage but she's absolutely brilliant at studies, right? Like, top of her class kind of brilliant. Anyway, she gets this amazing opportunity along with another scholarship kid named Aakash to take this super competitive entrance exam for Oxford, which could basically change their entire lives. It's the kind of moment you dream about when you're coming from nothing.

Here's where things get interesting though — Niyati befriends this rich girl Chhavi who's honestly pretty hopeless at academics, and she asks Niyati to help her cheat during exams. At first it's just a friend helping a friend, you know? But then money enters the picture and suddenly all these wealthy kids are throwing cash at Niyati and Aakash to help them pass this big international entrance test. These two end up being so clever that they create this whole scheme to make it work.

The thing is, all this money they're making isn't corrupting them in the obvious way — Niyati's literally sending it back to her orphanage and helping out there. But you can feel the moral ground shifting beneath them, and that's what makes it so tense to watch. You're left wondering whether these two will stick to their values or if the chase for money will completely change who they are.
