Vikram Bose's Review of Commando: A One Man Army

Pooja Bhatt's directorial venture attempts an ambitious fusion of geopolitical intrigue and mass action cinema, starting with a genuinely compelling premise—a disavowed soldier seeking redemption while protecting an innocent woman from a tyrannical gangster. The film's first act establishes this moral complexity reasonably well, and Vidyut Jammwal brings his characteristic physicality and earnestness to Karan's character. Where the narrative falters is in execution: the Chinese border subplot, which promises thematic weight about national honor and betrayal, dissolves into the background once Jammwal enters Simrit's orbit. The romantic subplot feels hastily sketched, robbing both characters of genuine emotional stakes. Jammwal does what he does best—deliver visceral, unadorned action sequences—but even these feel repetitive by the film's midpoint, lacking the inventive choreography that might have elevated the material.

The supporting cast, particularly Pooja Chopra as Simrit, struggle against underwritten dialogue and thin characterization. AK-74 as a villain is more caricature than credible threat, his motivations never extending beyond stock villainy. Technically, the cinematography captures the jungle locales with decent visual appeal, though the editing during action sequences occasionally obscures the geography of combat. For what is essentially a B-movie action vehicle with moderate box office success, the film deserve

Storyline

So basically, this guy Karan is a super skilled military officer who gets caught up in this crazy international incident when his helicopter crashes near the Chinese border. The Chinese authorities decide to use him as a scapegoat to make India look bad, and things get so bad that the Indian government basically disowns him to avoid an international scandal. After spending a year being tortured, Karan manages to escape and finds himself on the run.

Pretty soon after that, he meets this woman named Simrit who's fleeing from a powerful gangster called AK-74, who wants to force her into marriage for political power. Karan jumps in to help her out, but they end up having to escape into a river with AK-74 and his army of goons chasing them down. Simrit tells him that this gangster basically runs her entire hometown like it's his personal kingdom, keeping everyone under control through fear and intimidation.

So Karan, being the hero he is, decides he's going to take on this whole criminal empire to help Simrit. He uses his military training and combat skills to battle AK-74's forces in the jungle, leading to this intense cat-and-mouse game between them. Things get pretty brutal and the stakes just keep getting higher as the conflict escalates between our guy and this gangster.
