5/10Critic Score

Anurag Kashyap's "Cigarette Ki Tarah" ventures into murky emotional territory with an ambitious premise—a man consumed by obsessive love, isolated from the world, yet finding redemption through unwavering faith in his feelings. The film attempts to explore the destructive nature of obsession while simultaneously romanticizing it, a tonal balancing act that rarely lands convincingly. The lead performance carries genuine vulnerability, and there are moments where the director's signature grit surfaces through the narrative. However, the execution falters significantly; the story meanders without building sufficient dramatic momentum, and the central conflict between self-destruction and salvation feels philosophically confused rather than philosophically profound.

What undermines the film most critically is its inability to justify its own thematic weight. The screenplay tries to have it both ways—condemning the protagonist's isolation while celebrating his stubborn faith—but never reconciles these contradictions into something resonant. The supporting cast feels underutilized, and the cinematography, while competent, doesn't elevate the material beyond its structural limitations. For a film built entirely on psychological and emotional stakes, the pacing becomes tedious rather than tense, and by the final act, we're left with a resolution that feels more like capitulation than catharsis.

Storyline

So basically, there's this guy who gets completely swept up in his feelings for this gorgeous woman. His intense devotion becomes kind of all-consuming, you know? It pulls him away from everyone else and leaves him standing alone against basically the whole world. Pretty heavy stuff.

Things get really dark and messy for him as he's dealing with all these problems that his obsession has created. You'd think he'd just throw in the towel and give up at this point, but he doesn't. He keeps holding onto his faith in what he feels for her, no matter how bad things get.

And here's the thing – by staying true to his feelings and never losing hope, he actually starts to figure out solutions to get himself out of this mess he's in. It's like his unwavering belief becomes his strength, even when everything around him seems impossible.
