Chamku attempts to explore the redemption arc of a man caught between his violent past and the possibility of normalcy, a premise with genuine dramatic potential. Shahid Kapoor brings a certain intensity to Chandrama Singh, and there are moments—particularly in scenes with Priyanka Chopra's Shubhi—where the film finds emotional resonance in the tension between his two lives. Director Rajesh Mapuskar, however, struggles to balance the competing tones of espionage thriller and romantic drama, resulting in a narrative that feels fragmented rather than cohesive. The screenplay meanders through its dark premise without building sufficient momentum, and while the bones of a compelling character study exist, the execution lacks the precision needed to make it truly work.

What ultimately undermines Chamku is its inability to commit fully to either its political intrigue or its love story. The RAW-IB subplot feels undercooked and occasionally contradicts the film's emotional core, while the relationship with Shubhi, though touching, doesn't develop with enough complexity to justify the dramatic stakes presented. Mapuskar's previous work has shown inconsistency, and here that pattern continues—there are individual scenes that demonstrate craft, but they don't accumulate into a compelling whole. Storyline

So basically, this guy Chandrama Singh had a really tragic childhood where his entire family was killed, and he ended up being raised by this tough Naxal leader named Baba in Bihar. Pretty dark start, right? But things get even more complicated when he gets recruited into this secretive government program run by RAW and the Intelligence Bureau to basically take out political targets.

Then everything changes when he meets Shubhi, this sweet kindergarten teacher who kind of becomes his light at the end of the tunnel. He genuinely wants to turn his life around and leave all that dangerous spy stuff behind to be with her and have a normal, peaceful existence. You can really see how much she means to him and how badly he wants to change.

But of course, life has other plans for him! Through some random twist of fate, he ends up getting pulled back into the whole criminal underworld that he was trying so hard to escape from. So the movie basically explores what happens when someone's trying to leave their dangerous past behind but keeps getting dragged back in, which honestly makes for some pretty intense drama.
