4/10Critic Score

Bhopal Express grapples with one of India's most devastating industrial tragedies, yet fails to harness the emotional weight of its subject matter with the precision it demands. The film's attempt to chronicle the 1984 Bhopal disaster through the lens of a young couple and their circle feels scattered and diffuse, lacking the narrative cohesion that makes disaster films like *Rang De Basanti* or even the documentary approach of *1984* so viscerally impactful. Director's handling of the corporate negligence angle—particularly the chilling detail about the disabled warning siren—arrives more as exposition than earned revelation, and the generational genetic damage subplot, while thematically rich, remains underdeveloped. The performances are earnest but constrained by dialogue that too often tells rather than shows, robbing viewers of the intimate human moments that could anchor this sprawling tragedy.

What the film does attempt is commendable: centering resilience and survival alongside accountability. However, the tonal inconsistency undermines its purpose. Scenes oscillate between melodrama and documentary realism without finding a compelling middle ground, reminiscent of lesser attempts at the "issue-based" genre that plagued Hindi cinema in the 2010s. The cinematography occasionally captures the suffocating atmosphere of post-disaster Bhopal, but these moments are fleeting. Where *Bhopal Express* stumbles most critically is in its inability to make us care deeply about it

Storyline

So there's this film that takes you back to 1984 in Bhopal, India, where this massive industrial disaster went down. A chemical factory operated by Union Carbide basically leaked poisonous gas that spread across a huge area, killing thousands of people and injuring hundreds of thousands more. What makes it even more tragic is that the factory actually turned off their warning siren so people wouldn't get "worried" — can you imagine? The whole thing becomes this devastating look at how corporations can be reckless with people's lives and safety.

The movie really digs into how this disaster didn't just affect people in the moment, but continues to haunt them for generations. Scientists discover that the toxic gas caused genetic damage that'll keep affecting families for years and years to come. It's this heartbreaking realization that the consequences go way deeper than anyone could have predicted, and innocent people are paying the price for corporate negligence.

The whole story gets told through the perspective of a young married couple and their friends who are trying to rebuild their lives after everything falls apart. You see how they navigate through the chaos and destruction, trying to make sense of what happened and figure out how to move forward. It's really a human story about resilience and survival in the face of something absolutely catastrophic.
