Anees Bazmee's return to the haunted mansion formula feels less like a homecoming and more like retreading familiar corridors—comfortable, entertaining, but ultimately hollow. Kartik Aaryan slides effortlessly into the charming trickster role, his comic timing a saving grace that keeps the film's lighter moments afloat, while Tabu steals every scene she inhabits with a gravitas the script barely deserves. Yet beneath the supernatural thrills and laugh-out-loud sequences lies a fundamental problem: the story treats its own mythology as an afterthought. Manjulika's tragic backstory—potentially the emotional spine that could have elevated this beyond mere spectacle—remains frustratingly underdeveloped, a plot device rather than a character we come to understand or mourn. The possession sequences oscillate wildly between genuinely eerie and lazily ridiculous, as if the film itself cannot decide whether it wants to scare us or make us giggle.

What frustrates me most is that *Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2* could have honored the audience's emotional investment in Reet's trauma and isolation, making her vulnerability the gateway to understanding Manjulika's own pain. Instead, she becomes background noise to Ruhaan's antics and the film's obsession with jump scares and one-liners. The technical craft—cinematography of that crumbling estate, the sound design in quieter moments—hints at the horror-comedy this could have been, but Bazmee's direction prioritizes quick laughs over building dread or

Storyline

A grand estate in the heart of Rajasthan holds a dark secret. Within its walls, ancient rituals once clashed with forces beyond understanding—a vengeful spirit named Manjulika, bent on destruction, was finally trapped and bound behind sealed doors by those who understood the old ways. The family fled, leaving the mansion to its silence and shadows, hoping never to return.

Nearly two decades pass. A charming travel influencer named Ruhaan crosses paths with Reet, a medical student caught between duty and her own desires, on a fateful journey. When fate intervenes through a terrible accident that claims many lives, Reet's family believes she is gone. But she survives, and in that moment of clarity, she discovers a painful truth—those closest to her have already moved on, entangled in secrets of their own. With nowhere else to turn and everything to hide, Reet convinces the reluctant Ruhaan to accompany her back to the one place her family has abandoned: the ancestral mansion in Bhawanigarh.

As they step across the threshold of that forsaken house, neither realizes what they are awakening. The walls remember. The darkness stirs.
