Ashutosh Gowariker's *Baabul* arrives with a premise so audaciously unconventional that you want to root for it—a father-in-law orchestrating a second chance at love for his widowed daughter-in-law challenges everything we expect from Hindi cinema. Amitabh Bachchan carries the film's emotional weight with a quiet dignity, portraying Balraj as a man caught between progressive ideals and the weight of family expectations. Yet the execution falters where it matters most. The film asks profound questions about grief, duty, and whether love can bloom again, but it settles for melodrama instead of genuine introspection. Rani Mukerji's Millie feels more like a pawn in her father-in-law's benevolent scheme than a woman reclaiming her own narrative, and this fundamental imbalance undermines the story's feminist potential. The supporting cast—particularly Shobhna's maternal anxiety and Balwant's traditionalism—are drawn too broadly, reducing complex family tension into simplistic conflict.

Storyline

So there's this super successful businessman named Balraj who's living the dream with his wife until their son Avinash comes back from studying abroad. Avinash falls head over heels for Millie, this really cool and independent artist, and they get married and have a beautiful son together. But then something tragic happens that completely upends their world and leaves everyone heartbroken and trying to figure out how to move forward.

The thing is, Balraj is this really progressive guy who wants to see Millie happy again, so he starts thinking about unconventional solutions. There's actually another guy named Rajat who's been secretly in love with Millie for ages, and Balraj decides to reach out to him with an interesting proposal. Rajat comes back to India and starts spending time with Millie and her son, and feelings start rekindling in ways nobody expected.

But here's where it gets complicated because not everyone in the family is cool with Balraj's modern thinking. His wife Shobhna is worried about losing her grandson, and his traditional brother Balwant thinks some things just shouldn't happen in their culture. So there's this whole family drama where Balraj has to convince everyone to accept change and think about what's actually best for Millie's future instead of sticking to old rules.
