7/10Critic Score

Anmol Gupte's *Apaharan* is a film that understands the anatomy of moral compromise with surprising nuance. At its core, it's a story about how circumstance and paternal disappointment can corrode a man's character, and the director handles this descent with a steady hand rather than melodramatic flourish. Ajay's journey from frustrated degree-holder to hardened criminal feels earned because Gupte never lets us forget the principled father whose values linger like an unhealed wound. The film's greatest strength lies in this tension—between the pull of easy money and the ghost of paternal ethics—which gives the narrative a psychological weight that elevates it beyond standard crime fare.

Emraan Hashmi delivers one of his more restrained and convincing performances here, avoiding the theatrical excess that sometimes undermines his roles. There's a weariness to Ajay that speaks volumes, and in the quieter moments—particularly those with his father—we sense the internal conflict that will eventually consume him. Nana Patekar, as the menacing Tabrez, brings a reptilian charisma that makes the underworld feel genuinely dangerous rather than glamorous. The film's execution, however, occasionally stumbles; the pacing in the middle stretch grows uneven, and some subplot developments feel rushed. Yet the final act, culminating in that prison confrontation, achieves a tragic inevitability that lingers long after the credits roll.

Storyline

So there's this guy Ajay who's basically stuck in life - he's got his degree but can't find work, and he really wants to become a cop. The problem is his dad is super principled and won't let him take shortcuts, even when Ajay tries to bribe his way into the police academy. When his father busts him for the corruption, Ajay gets frustrated and starts heading down a darker path instead.

Things spiral pretty quickly from there. Ajay messes up a kidnapping attempt and ends up crossing paths with this really dangerous gang run by an underworld boss named Tabrez Alam who basically controls the whole kidnapping business in Bihar. Instead of getting killed, Ajay actually joins up with Tabrez and becomes a major player in his operation, which is wild considering where he started.

But here's where it gets interesting - even though Ajay climbs the ranks and becomes powerful, his father's values keep haunting him, and he starts to see through Tabrez's betrayals. Eventually things come to a head when they're both in jail together, and the whole situation reaches a pretty intense and tragic conclusion that you'll want to see play out.
