Review
Aashiq stumbles through a narrative that can't decide whether it wants to be a charming romantic comedy or a gritty thriller about human trafficking, and this tonal whiplash ultimately undermines what could have been an engaging love story. The film's first half genuinely charms—the "dream girl" phone call sequences have a playful, almost *Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na* energy to them, and the lead pair's chemistry is palpable enough to carry those lighter moments. However, the sudden pivot into exploitation and corruption in the second half feels jarringly unearned; the director sacrifices character development and narrative coherence for shock value, much like the frantic, undercooked climaxes that plagued his earlier work. Where this film distinguishes itself from his previous efforts is in its willingness to attempt something structurally ambitious, even if the execution remains clumsy.
The performances are the film's saving grace—the romantic leads bring earnestness to their scenes together, and there's a genuine vulnerability in how they navigate the manufactured obstacles. Supporting turns, particularly the antagonists, occasionally elevate generic material with committed work. Yet the screenplay betrays everyone involved; the "brutal misunderstanding" that separates the lovers is contrived, Jai's villainy feels unmotivated, and the Inspector's vendetta never lands with the weight it needs to. Storyline
Chander becomes the unlikely cupid when he helps his best friend elope with Sapna, but what he doesn't realize is that Sapna's gorgeous best friend Pooja is watching—and she's absolutely smitten! She starts calling him anonymously as "dream girl," flirting shyly over the phone and making his heart race with mystery and intrigue. When his clever father tricks her into revealing herself at a fake wedding, Chander finally meets the voice behind the calls—and sparks fly instantly as they begin dating with genuine, infectious chemistry.
But paradise crumbles when Pooja's cold, controlling parents force her into an arranged engagement with someone else, and a brutal misunderstanding between the lovers sends Chander spiraling into despair. Enter Jai, Chander's supposed childhood friend, who turns out to be a manipulative snake—he tricks Pooja into a deserted meeting and sells her to a ruthless pimp, leaving Chander tormented and desperate to find her. Meanwhile, the suspended Inspector Mathur (Sapna's brother, who's hated Chander all along) uses this chaos as his weapon, setting elaborate traps and falsely arresting him, all while Chander frantically searches for his lost love.
In a dizzying climax packed with disguises, switcheroos, and double-crosses, Chander pieces together the horrifying truth about Jai's betrayal and fights tooth-and-nail against corrupt cops and criminals alike. Through sheer determination and heart, he tracks down Pooja from the clutches of the pimp, and together they expose Jai's treachery and Mathur's corruption once and for all. Love triumphs as our heroes are finally reunited, proving that true connection can survive lies, betrayal, and even the most twisted schemes thrown their way!
