Rajshree Thakur's "Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage" is a film caught between earnest romantic ambition and the messy reality of its execution. The premise—a forbidden romance blooming during Navaratri nights, wrapped in underworld intrigue—has genuine potential, and there are stretches where the film finds its footing. The chemistry between the leads carries the secret romance sequences with believable tenderness, and the nine-night celebration provides a visually rich backdrop that the cinematography occasionally capitalizes on. Thakur shows she understands how to build intimate moments, particularly in the early encounters. However, the tonal shifts are jarring; the film lurches from whimsical romance to violent gangster drama without the narrative scaffolding to make either feel earned. The "male disguise" subplot feels borrowed from a different film entirely, and the final-act climax—relying on student solidarity to stop an underworld don—strains credibility beyond repair.

What truly disappoints is the squandered potential of the supporting cast and premise. Sapna's journey from suffocation to agency deserved more nuance than the film provides; her character pivots feel reactive rather than organic. The father-don character could have been a complex antagonist, but instead registers as a plot mechanism. Technically, there are bright spots—the Navaratri sequences pop with color, and the music occasionally elevates scenes that script and direction cannot sustain on their own.

Storyline

Sapna's suffocating life under her underworld Don father's roof explodes the night she sneaks to a wedding and gets attacked by rival gangsters—only to be rescued by Rohit, a college kid who falls for her instantly. They're separated before they can even exchange names, but Rohit's relentless and charming: he tracks her down and infiltrates her home as part of a musical band during Navaratri celebrations, where they spark an electric secret romance over nine magical nights. Her father Pratap actually starts trusting him once he learns Rohit saved Sapna, and things seem impossibly perfect until everything crashes down.

Just when Rohit's won over even Sapna's protective sister-in-law Nisha, Pratap drops a bombshell—he's arranged for Sapna to marry some rich guy's son in London, announcing it on Navaratri's final night like a knife to the chest. Heartbroken, Sapna ends things with Rohit to protect him from her father and brother's lethal wrath, but Rohit refuses to accept defeat and literally whisks her away on engagement party night. With his college mates' help, she goes undercover as a male student and finally experiences actual freedom—but Pratap thinks a rival gang has kidnapped her and unleashes absolute chaos, nearly tearing the city apart searching for her.

When Raman and his goons show up at Rohit's hostel looking for blood, they're met with hundreds of students forming a human shield—pure solidarity that stops the violence cold. Pratap arrives and, in a stunning reversal, publicly praises Rohit and blesses their relationship, declaring his blessing right there and convincing Sapna to come home and prepare to marry the man she actually loves. It's a triumph that feels earned—Sapna finally gets her freedom, her love, and her father's acceptance all at once, breaking free from tyranny through sheer courage and community.
