Uzbekfilm might sound like it belongs in Central Asian cinema history (because it does), but here's the thing—this legendary studio has been cranking out films since 1925, making it one of the oldest production houses still standing. Originally called Eastern Star, it's produced roughly 400 feature films and 100 animated films over its nearly century-long run, becoming the powerhouse of Uzbek cinema. From beloved classics like *Maftuningman* and *Yor-yor* to more recent releases, Uzbekfilm has consistently delivered films that resonated with audiences across generations, cementing its place as a cultural institution that survived wars, Soviet restructuring, and the independence movement. What makes Uzbekfilm special is its commitment to storytelling that tackles real social issues with wit and heart. The studio became famous for creating "Nashtar," a satirical newsreel that used humor and cartoons to call out social problems—basically the studio's way of saying cinema could be both entertaining and socially conscious. Since Uzbekistan's independence in 1991 and its conversion to a joint-stock company in 1996, Uzbekfilm has continued evolving while staying true to its roots, consistently producing quality content that blends traditional storytelling with contemporary filmmaking. Today, while the studio maintains a measured output of around six films annually, it remains a beacon of creative excellence in Central Asian cinema.
