Production Studio
UTV Spotboy
UTV Motion Pictures, founded by Ronnie and Zarina Screwvala in 1996, became one of India's most formidable film studios and a major player across South Asia. Starting as the film distribution arm of UTV Software Communications, the studio quickly evolved into a powerhouse that handled everything from creative development and production to marketing, distribution, and worldwide syndication. Over two decades, UTV built an impressive resume that included not just Bollywood hits but also regional films, animation productions, and international projects through partnerships with heavyweight studios like Disney, 20th Century Studios, and Sony Pictures. The studio's reach was genuinely global, making it a rare Indian production house that could compete on an international scale. What made UTV Motion Pictures special was its willingness to take creative risks and its slick, polished approach to filmmaking that appealed to both mainstream and discerning audiences. The studio carved out a distinct identity by balancing commercial sensibilities with quality storytelling, often backing projects that other studios might have passed on. Though the studio eventually closed in July 2017 after releasing Jagga Jasoos, it left an indelible mark on Hindi cinema and proved that Indian production houses could think and operate globally. By that point, UTV had already shifted focus to distribution of Hollywood content and television ventures, but the legacy of what it achieved during its production heyday remains significant in Bollywood's modern era.
