Ranjit Studios was basically the powerhouse of early Bollywood, ranking right up there with Kohinoor and Imperial as one of the industry's big three. Founded by Chandulal Shah and Gohar Kayoum Mamajiwala in 1929, the studio started strong with silent films and quickly pivoted to talkies after rebranding as Ranjit Movietone in 1932. By the mid-1930s, they were churning out around six films a year with a massive crew of 300 people, racking up hits like The Secretary, Sati Savitri, and Barrister's Wife. The studio's golden run stretched all the way through the 1940s with acclaimed films like Achhut and the legendary Tansen—basically proving they could deliver both commercially and critically until they wound down in the late 1960s. What made Ranjit Studios stand out was their willingness to work across multiple languages and genres, producing Hindi, Punjabi, and Gujarati films with equal enthusiasm. They weren't just chasing trends either—social dramas and period pieces became their signature, and they had a knack for adapting classic stories and literary works to the screen. Whether it was the poignant Jogan or the musical brilliance of Tansen, Ranjit productions had substance behind the spectacle. Though the studio is often overshadowed in Bollywood history by later juggernauts, their pioneering work in the transition from silent to sound cinema and their consistent output helped shape what Hindi cinema would become.
