Rajkumar Kohli
Rajkumar Kohli was a veteran Bollywood director who carved out an impressive four-decade career (1963–2002) churning out masala entertainers that kept audiences hooked. Starting with the hit Lootera in 1965, he became known for delivering big ensemble cast films packed with action, drama, and revenge plots—think Nagin (1976) and Jaani Dushman (1979), which became cult classics. His films were star-studded affairs featuring powerhouses like Dharmendra, Jeetendra, and Shatrughan Sinha, and he had a knack for casting strong female leads like Reena Roy and Anita Raj. Beyond Bollywood, Kohli also made his mark in Punjabi cinema with films like Dulla Bhatti. Kohli's signature style was unapologetically over-the-top melodrama mixed with high-octane action sequences—the kind of cinema that defined the '70s and '80s in Hindi films. He was instrumental in popularizing the revenge thriller formula in Bollywood, and his influence on the industry's action-drama genre remains undeniable. On the personal front, he famously met his wife Nishi on the sets of Lootera, and later became a filmmaker-turned-mentor to his son Armaan Kohli, launching him in Virodhi (1992) and subsequent films. Though his final directorial venture, the 2002 reboot Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani, didn't find its footing with audiences, Kohli's legacy as a prolific and bold storyteller of Hindi cinema remains intact.
