Despite their incredible run of commercially successful films, Carolco's empire began to crumble in the mid-90s—a disastrous $147 million loss on Cutthroat Island in 1995 essentially sealed their fate, leading to bankruptcy that same year and marking the end of one of cinema's most ambitious independent studios.
