Director
Sulabha Deshpande
Sulabha Deshpande was a powerhouse of Indian theatre and cinema who spent over five decades leaving her mark on both worlds. Starting her journey in the 1960s, she appeared in over 73 Bollywood films while simultaneously becoming a leading figure in the experimental theatre movement of Mumbai. Beyond mainstream commercial cinema, she earned serious credentials in art house films like Bhumika, Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan, and Gaman, proving she could hold her own alongside the industry's finest character actors. In 1971, she co-founded the theatre group Awishkar with her husband Arvind Deshpande and created Chandrashala, a children's theatre wing that's still going strong today—a legacy that speaks volumes about her commitment to nurturing talent. What really set Sulabha apart was her refusal to be boxed in by any single medium or genre. She moved fluidly between experimental theatre, art cinema, commercial Bollywood, and television, always bringing authenticity and depth to her craft. Her work with personalities like Vijay Tendulkar and Vijaya Mehta in the theatre world influenced a generation of artists, while her film roles—from serious character work to later appearances in films like English Vinglish—showcased remarkable range. She even earned the Maharashtra State Film Award for Best Actress for Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe, cementing her status not just as a working actor but as an artist whose contributions shaped Indian cultural spaces across multiple platforms.
