Director
Shantanu Moitra
Shantanu Moitra is that rare breed of composer who's equally comfortable scoring intimate character dramas and massive blockbusters. Born in Lucknow in 1968, he's been crafting music for Hindi cinema since the mid-90s, but really made his mark in the 2000s with a string of critically acclaimed films that showcased his gift for blending classical sensibilities with contemporary storytelling. His work on Parineeta, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Lage Raho Munnabhai, and the phenomenally popular 3 Idiots proved he could do it all—from delicate emotional pieces to rousing anthems. The National Film Award he snagged in 2014 for Best Music Direction (Background Score) for Na Bangaaru Talli was just official recognition of what film lovers already knew: the man's a master. What sets Moitra apart is his musician's approach to film composition. A trained pianist and multi-instrumentalist who's equally adept on guitar, bass, and keyboards, he brings real instrumental depth to his scores rather than relying on orchestral padding. His music doesn't just underscore scenes—it tells its own story, often becoming as memorable as the film itself. Beyond Bollywood, he's also released private albums like Mann ke Manjeere and Ab ke Saawan with vocalist Shubha Mudgal, proving his artistry extends well beyond the silver screen. While he's been quieter in recent years compared to his prolific 2000s run, his influence on how contemporary Hindi cinema approaches background scores remains undeniable.
