Megha Ramaswamy is a Mumbai-based director and screenwriter who's been quietly making waves in Indian cinema since her 2011 screenwriting debut. She really turned heads with her directorial feature debut, What Are The Odds, a Netflix film that brought together an interesting ensemble cast including Abhay Deol and Monica Dogra. But before that, she'd already garnered serious festival credentials with two standout short films—Newborns, a hybrid documentary exploring the lives of acid-attack survivors, and Bunny, her first fiction short. Both premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival and found their way onto MUBI, proving she had something distinctive to say in cinema. What sets Ramaswamy apart is her refusal to fit neatly into indie or commercial boxes—her production banner Missfit Films is literally built on that philosophy. Her recent mid-length psychological horror film Lalanna's Song, starring Malayalam powerhouses Parvathy Thiruvothu and Rima Kallingal, won special mention for innovation at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles 2022, showing she's not afraid to push genre boundaries. Beyond filmmaking, she co-hosts Cause Effect, a platform creating socially conscious content, proving her work extends beyond the screen. With upcoming projects like the feature Reshma Shera in development, Ramaswamy continues to champion stories that matter, challenging what Bollywood can be.
