Director
Kailash Surendranath
Kailash Surendranath is one of those quietly legendary figures in Indian cinema who's shaped the way we consume media without always getting the spotlight he deserves. Born in 1950, this filmmaker and advertising maestro has an absolutely staggering resume—we're talking over 6,000 television commercials across decades. But here's what really sets him apart: his deep commitment to national integration through cinema. His 1986 short film Mile Sur Mera Tumhara became iconic, promoting India's "unity in diversity" as part of Doordarshan's Lok Seva Sanchaar initiative. Fast forward to 2022, and Surendranath was still carrying that torch with Har Ghar Tiranga, his fifth feature-length national integration film. The guy's literally been fighting for cultural harmony through his lens for over three decades. What makes Surendranath's work so distinctive is how he seamlessly moves between commercial and socially conscious cinema. He's directed some of the most memorable ads in Indian pop culture history—the groovy Liril commercials, those iconic Nirma campaigns, the Glucose-D spot with Amjad Khan, and even the Campa Cola ad featuring a young Salman Khan. Beyond advertising, his directorial ventures showcase a filmmaker genuinely invested in meaningful storytelling; his 2001 film Love You Hamesha, with A.R. Rahman's gorgeous music, proved he could handle Bollywood romance with finesse. Surendranath's real contribution to Indian cinema is showing that commercial success and cultural responsibility don't have to be mutually exclusive—something Bollywood could use more of today.
