Balu Mahendra

Balu Mahendra is one of those rare filmmakers who genuinely wore all the hats—cinematographer, director, screenwriter, editor—and excelled at every single one. Born in Sri Lanka in 1939, he caught the filmmaking bug after watching David Lean's *The Bridge on the River Kwai* shoot during a school trip, a moment that changed everything. He trained at FTII, started his career as a cinematographer in Malayalam cinema during the early 1970s, and racked up over 20 films in that role before making his directorial debut with the Kannada film *Kokila* in 1977. Over the next 36 years, Mahendra built a legacy as a trendsetter in Tamil and Malayalam cinema, sitting alongside legends like Bharathiraja. His mantelpiece groaned under the weight of six National Film Awards, including two for cinematography, plus five Filmfare Awards South, proving he was the real deal. What really set Mahendra apart was his complete creative control—he didn't just direct, he personally shot, wrote, and edited his films, treating each project as a total artistic vision. He's widely celebrated as an auteur who brought a distinctive visual language and storytelling sensibility to Indian cinema that influenced generations of filmmakers. Late in his career, he even founded a film school in Chennai to pass on his knowledge in cinematography, direction, and acting. Balu Mahendra passed away in 2014, but his body of work and the filmmakers he mentored continue to shape Indian cinema today.
