Tara Deshpande

Tara Deshpande

Tara Deshpande is one of Bollywood's most versatile talents—an actress, writer, model, and MTV VJ who made her mark across multiple platforms before the industry even knew what a multipotentialite was. In the early '90s, she hosted the popular Zee TV show Kab Kyon Kahaan and built a solid reputation on the Mumbai stage, including an unforgettable turn as Begum Sumroo in Alyque Padamsee's acclaimed play. Her film career, though selective, has been impressively curated—she appeared in critically praised projects like Sudhir Mishra's Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin and Kaizad Gustad's cult film Bombay Boys, proving she had an eye for meaningful cinema rather than just commercial projects. Beyond the screen, Tara's creativity found expression through writing, publishing her debut book Fifty and Done at just 23 through HarperCollins. Her contribution to Bollywood extends beyond acting into championing storytelling that celebrates culture and cuisine—evident in her later works like A Sense for Spice: Recipes and Stories from a Konkan Kitchen (2012) and Indian Sense of Salad (2018). Since relocating to Boston after her marriage in 2001, Tara has maintained a transnational presence, splitting her time between New York and Mumbai, refusing to completely step away from the industry she helped shape while building a rich life beyond the spotlight.
