Shyama, born Khurshid Akhtar in Lahore in 1935, was a true versatile talent who graced both Hindi and Punjabi cinema for nearly five decades. She started as a child artist way back in 1945 with Zeenat before director Vijay Bhatt gave her the screen name that would become iconic. After years of grinding through smaller roles in films like Shabnam and Tarana, she finally got her big break with the 1954 classic Aar Paar, which launched her into stardom. Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, Shyama became a recognized force in Indian cinema, delivering memorable performances in hits like Sharada, Bhabhi, and Barsaat Ki Raat. Her talent was acknowledged by the industry when she won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1958, cementing her status as a skilled performer. What made Shyama stand out was her ability to slip seamlessly between different genres and character types—she could do drama, romance, and everything in between with equal ease. She wasn't just a Hindi cinema fixture either; her work in Punjabi films proved she had genuine range across different film industries. As she got older, rather than fading away, Shyama smartly transitioned into character roles in films like Milan and Sawan Bhadon, showing the kind of career longevity that few actors manage. She worked consistently right up until 1989 with Hathyar before calling it a day, leaving behind a legacy that spanned generations of Indian cinema. Shyama passed away in Mumbai in 2017, but her contributions to Bollywood's golden age remain cherished by classic film lovers.
