Nandita Das
Nandita Das is a powerhouse who's been shaping Indian cinema for nearly four decades, acting in over 40 films across ten different languages. From her breakout roles in Deepa Mehta's provocative *Fire* (1996) and *Earth* (1998) to critically acclaimed performances in *Kannathil Muthamittal* and *Before The Rains*, she's consistently chosen challenging, meaningful work that pushes boundaries. But Das didn't stop at acting—she transitioned into directing with the powerful *Firaaq* (2008), which premiered at Toronto and racked up over 20 festival awards, proving she's got serious chops behind the camera too. Her recognition extends globally, earning her the prestigious Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2011, and she's served on major juries including Cannes Film Festival's main competition. What sets Nandita apart is her commitment to using cinema as a vehicle for social commentary and representation. Her 2018 directorial *Manto*, about the legendary Indo-Pakistani writer, screened at Cannes and showcased her nuanced storytelling. Beyond filmmaking, she's actively addressed pressing issues—from producing the awareness campaign *India's Got Colour* tackling colourism to directing *Listen to Her*, highlighting domestic violence during lockdown. Her most recent film *Zwigato* (2023) continued this tradition, offering an intimate look at the lives of gig economy workers. Whether on screen or behind it, Das remains one of Bollywood's most thoughtful, socially conscious voices, consistently creating work that entertains, challenges, and inspires conversations.
