Anita Kanwar
Anita Kanwar is one of those quietly brilliant talents who defined Indian television in the '80s and early '90s. A National School of Drama graduate from the 1978 batch, she became a household name playing the beloved Lajjo ji in Doordarshan's iconic soap opera Buniyaad, a role that remains etched in the memories of an entire generation. But her talent wasn't limited to TV—she delivered stunning performances in films like Mahesh Bhatt's Janam and, most notably, Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay!, which earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress nomination. Despite the critical acclaim and unmistakable potential she displayed across these projects, Bollywood's unforgiving typecasting machine limited her film opportunities, leading her to step back from the industry for much of the '90s. What made Kanwar special was her ability to bring depth and tenderness to every character—qualities that even her contemporaries recognized as extraordinary. When she returned to television with Star Plus's crime thriller Saboot in 1998, playing the fierce Inspector KC, Chief of Homicide, she proved she could command screen presence in ways that went far beyond what the industry had initially boxed her into. Though her filmography may seem modest compared to her contemporaries, her contribution to Indian television storytelling and her influence on how women characters were portrayed remains invaluable. Today, Kanwar's legacy lives on as a reminder of a genuinely talented actress who deserved more substantial film roles than Bollywood was willing to offer her.
