Tigmanshu Dhulia
Tigmanshu Dhulia is one of Bollywood's most versatile creative forces—a dialogue writer, director, producer, and actor who's been shaping Hindi cinema since the early '90s. He first made waves penning the iconic dialogues for Dil Se.. in 1998, that groundbreaking Mani Ratnam film that became the first Bollywood movie to crack the UK top ten and premiered at Berlin International Film Festival. But Dhulia really proved his directorial prowess with Paan Singh Tomar, a gritty biographical drama that premiered at the 2010 BFI London Film Festival and later snagged the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2012. He followed that up with the Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster franchise, establishing himself as a filmmaker who doesn't shy away from complex, morally grey characters and storytelling. What sets Dhulia apart is his fearless approach to indie-style filmmaking within the Bollywood system—he creates visceral, character-driven narratives that feel refreshingly different from mainstream fare. His training at the National School of Drama in New Delhi clearly shaped his nuanced understanding of performance and dialogue. He's probably best recognized by general audiences as the menacing Ramadhir Singh in Anurag Kashyap's cult classic Gangs of Wasseypur, a role that showcased his acting chops and proved he could hold his own alongside heavyweight performers. Whether behind the camera or in front of it, Dhulia continues to be a voice for intelligent, unconventional cinema in Bollywood.
