Ravi Baswani
Born: 26 September 1946
Ravi Baswani was a Delhi-born comic gem who carved out a memorable career in Bollywood with his razor-sharp timing and subtle character work. He burst onto the scene with Sai Paranjpe's *Chashme Buddoor* in 1981, but really cemented his legacy with Kundan Shah's cult classic *Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro* (1983), a role that earned him the Filmfare Best Comedian Award in 1984. Over three decades of work in around 30 films, Baswani proved he was the kind of actor who could steal scenes not through loud antics, but through smart, understated performances that made you believe every moment. What set Baswani apart in an era of over-the-top comedy was his refusal to overplay things—he had the rare skill of underacting in a way that made characters feel authentic and deeply funny. His contribution to Bollywood was quietly revolutionary in how he elevated comedic acting to something more thoughtful and nuanced. Tragically, his life was cut short in July 2010 while scouting locations in Nainital for his directorial debut, a project that never got to see the light of day. His legacy, however, lives on in those timeless performances that still make audiences laugh and appreciate the craft of real acting.
