Minoo Mumtaz
Born: 26 April 1942
Minoo Mumtaz was a dancer and actress who carved out a solid career in Hindi cinema during the golden age of Bollywood in the 1950s and 1960s. Born as Malikunnisa Ali in Mumbai, she came from the legendary Mehmood Ali film family—her brother Mehmood was one of India's most celebrated comedians, which gave her insider access to the industry's circles. While she didn't become a leading lady, Minoo built a respectable filmography playing character roles and showcasing her dancing talents across numerous Hindi films. She proved that there was room in Bollywood for actresses who could do more than just look pretty—she brought skill, grace, and versatility to her roles. What set Minoo apart was her grace as a dancer and her willingness to take on diverse character parts rather than chasing stardom. She embodied that era of Bollywood when multi-talented performers who could sing, dance, and act were highly valued on screen. Though her peak years were behind her by the 1970s, Minoo remained a recognizable face from cinema's classic period. She eventually moved to Canada, where she spent her later years before passing away in Toronto in 2021, leaving behind a modest but memorable legacy as part of Bollywood's mid-century tapestry.
